LEAVE YOUR LEGACY

You’re gonna like this one! America! Legacy! WINNING baby!

Here’s another post from Coach Jaime that will have you WINNING more my friend…

The Memorial Day weekend always brings out the thankfulness in everyone. This year it has had me thinking about a lot, mostly because I watched my son touch EVERY AMERICAN FLAG down the walkway at our church as we were leaving. There was something special to me as I watched this, all I could remember was my dad’s flag my mom received during his Military Funeral. There’s very little I have to remind me of the great man my dad was, that flag is one of them.

This has me contemplating what kind of legacy I’m going to leave my own children and the impact I’m making here and now. What are you doing to make an impact today? What decisions are you making right now that will follow through to the next season or new group of athletes at DSD? When I think of somebody making an impact, I think of Cus D’Amato and how he literally changed the life of a young athlete named Michael Gerard Tyson, AKA Mike Tyson. Here’s a highlight video so you can see my absolute favorite boxer in action!

The bald older man you see in the video is Cus D’Amato, Mike Tysons trainer, mentor, and inspiration.
He saved Mike from the streets of Brooklyn at the ripe young age of 16, and took him in as a son and removed him from a reform school. Cus trained Mike and helped him to become the lethal knockout artist you saw in the video. I believe there are many ways to leave a legacy and change lives, but here’s 5 steps to help you get a WIN in life.

1. YOU MUST BE WILLING TO INVEST IN SOMEBODY

This requires taking a chance and actually committing yourself to something (a cause, belief system, etc.) and someone (fellow teammate, new DSD client, somebody on your heart).
We’ve all heard, and possibly even quoted the phrase by John C. Maxwell “People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care” but are we actually LIVING it?
The difference between Interest and investment is that investment simply requires you to be ALL IN! ARE YOU ALL IN?

2. INVESTMENTS TAKE TIME

I truly believe that small victories lead to the BIG WIN. There is not a successful athlete that make one single great play and then requested to sit out the rest of the game saying “coach, did you see that? That was too much awesome for one season, I’m gonna sit the rest of this one out.” THAT SOUNDS RIDICULOUS! Great athletes hustle daily and do not allow feelings or circumstances to dictate the amount of hustle they bring to the table.

3.YOU MUST BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

It starts with you! You have got to start believing in yourself and your own abilities if you are going to create something that will last. Mike Tyson has been quoted numerous times saying that Cus D’Amato was the man who taught him to believe in himself. And when he finally began to believe in his own strength and ability, there was no stopping him. If this is a hard one for you, #4 will be the key!

4. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A MENTOR YOURSELF, FIND ONE

There is not a price that can be placed on a hunger to learn. Find somebody better than you, smarter than you, faster or stronger than you and just learn from them. Ask questions, take notes, allow them to pour into you. It must be a miserable existence to think you have all the answers and can figure it out on your own, DON’T BE THAT PERSON.

5. YOU MUST HAVE PASSION

A famous Powerlifting coach constantly says that “Passion trumps everything.” There must be a fire that burns deep within you, keeping you on the right track to create something that is going to last. I am not talking about passion the emotion, I’m talking about the passion that is contagious, something that other people are drawn to. Figure out what it is you are passionate about and pursue that with all that is within you. I guarantee that if you follow your passion, you will never work a day in your life. You will be simply doing the thing you love to do every dang day!
